According to Bloomberg News, almost 20 percent of Americans over age 65 are now working–the highest percentage since the introduction of Medicare. Twenty-seven percent of older Americans say they plan to keep working “as long as possible.” Twelve percent say they’ll “never retire.”

Whether that’s good news or bad news depends on your perspective. Bloomberg notes that “almost half” said they were going to continue working mainly for financial reasons. On the other hand, that means more than half had other reasons for working. More than a third said they’re working mainly because they like their jobs–or at least like being active in the workplace.

And maybe working just beats the alternative. The percentage of people who enjoy retirement has declined since 1998, Bloomberg reports.
